Abandonment and abuse/neglect/ adoption

Tone:

In several scenes Matilda is abused verbally and emotionally neglected by her parents. She is also abused by a frightening, abusive principal character at the school. In the end scene, Matilda's parents gleefully abandon her to be adopted by her beloved teacher.

Comments:

While this was intended to be a positive story of good triumphing over evil and love conquering all, it actually turned out to be a frightening and disturbingly violent story of abuse. The end scene where the parents apparently took off without a backward glance had my 7 year old in tears.

Recommendation:

Don't see this movie with a child under the age of 10.
